Check Credibility Of The Painter

Revised: June 20, 2011

Everyone should ask for references when hiring an independent painter, whether for the office or for home. However, most people just look at the information, provided by the painter and take it at face value. Given the fact that, perhaps the painter will present you, with only the most positive evaluations, you can quickly understand, why this gives you no real concrete references.

Reliability of the painter

The most positive action to take would be to reserve time to contact several previous clients. Even ask specifically to acquire contact information, of someone who was not totally happy with the work. You should also visit one of the painter’s latest project sites, with the painter.

References are not all the same. Therefore, previous clients over various periods need to be contacted. By contacting all these people, you will learn, not only about the quality of the painter’s current work, but how well his work and warranty holds up. Additionally, you’ll also be able to gauge the painter’s long-term association with his clients.

The quality of his workmanship:

The first question to ask is whether the client is happy with the quality of the workmanship provided by this painter. Everybody has their own ideas of quality, so one should take a look at their home and be the judge. Pay attention to finishing areas around doors, windows and cupboards. Establish whether the lines are straight and enquire if proper surface preparation was applied, as this lends to better, more pleasing result.

Before painting, all non painted surfaces need to protected, .for exteriors, this includes concrete, paving, and gardens. For interiors, moving and covering furniture and all flooring, is a prime concern. If a painter was shoddy with one customer, the chances are he will be slapdash, with all of them. One should not have to clean up behind a painter, as this can cost money and cause stress and irritation.

Respect and good manners

The entire experience, from beginning to end, needs to be as stress free as possible, this includes the painter being respectful and considerate. If the painter is relaxed and happy, at the job, the quality and attention to details will be better. The customers attitude can and will affect the entire paint job. The question of respect and good manners should be addressed with past customers, If the answer to this question is negative, then do not go any farther, with this painter…

Enquire about a warranty

Enquire whether a warranty was in place and if it has any value. You also need to know the time period before expiry, three years is a reasonable period. Simply stating a warranty isn’t enough. A good painter is happy to honour his warranty, so obtain a written and signed document, and ensure you understand its limitations. Excellent and trustworthy painters use quality materials and know their level of expertise. If a painter refuses to consider a written and signed warranty, this is a red light warning, so continue the search, for a trustworthy painter.
