Creating A New Kitchen Layout
Our kitchens are the hearts of our homes. This area is probably one of the most foot trodden rooms of the house. Planning a makeover for the kitchen is about more than just finding more space for everything or just making it look beautiful. The best kitchens designs have been designed with the layout in mind of how best to make it function. There are some tips to get the best kitchen design for your space.
Kitchen triangle
Every kitchen has what is called the kitchen triangle. The three points of the triangle are the kitchen sink, the stove and the refrigerator. These are the three most used parts in a kitchen. The triangle does not have to be perfect but for the best layout, make sure that each side of the triangle is at least four feet long. Try and not go beyond nine feet of each side of the triangle.
The triangle needs to be totally unobstructed for the best results. This means that standing in the middle of the triangle; you should have access to each of the three most used parts of the kitchen without disrupting the natural flow of moving from one to the other.
Counters come in different layouts
The most popular version when it comes to counters is the U-shaped version. These are where the counter tops including the stove top and sink cover three walls. An L-shaped design covers two walls. The galley design has counter space along the two walls parallel to each other. The counter layout depends very much on cupboard doors and the length of your kitchen. The U-shaped design works well in a square shaped kitchen while the longer kitchens work better with L-shaped or galley designed counter layouts.
Workspace
Without space to work, a kitchen becomes impractical to work in. You need plenty space to work on where you can put utensils and the like. Taking care that you have enough space is absolutely vital.
If you have a single basin for instance, you will need space for a drying rack or if you are working on the stove, you might need space beside the stove. Most chefs like an additional third counter top space to work on. For many meals, you will want as many work surfaces as possible.
One way to double the counter top space in your kitchen is to add an island. This could be a good idea but just make sure that by adding one, you do not disrupt the triangle flow from the refrigerator, stove and sink. Otherwise you will constantly be bumping into it.
Dining room from kitchen
Design your kitchen with the dining room in mind. Some people have a table in the kitchen where they eat every day but if you have a separate dining room and transport food from the kitchen to the dining room, you need easy foot space access. Otherwise walking around obstacles to get there could be highly frustrating.
Doors
Do not forget about doors. There are plenty of doors that will be opening onto the flow of traffic. Make sure that the doors of appliances do not block actual entrances to rooms.
Also ensure that when you open the oven door there is enough space to get past if you do decide on an island in the middle. With taking these few handy tips into consideration you won’t make the mistake of creating something that looked good on paper but is impractical in its function.
