Decorating Your Kitchen

Revised: June 1, 2011

There are many ways that you can change the look of your kitchen without having to do a complete renovation. These include things such as putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls or even on the built in cupboards. Johannesburg has many different lifestyle and décor centres that stock many different types of products and items that can help you change the style and theme of your kitchen without costing a fortune.

Redecorating a space can be stressful. If you plan things correctly then you can reduce the amount of stress associated with this task. You should firstly decide what exactly your budget is going to be. You can then start thinking about the type of theme or style you would like to have in the kitchen. This can be things like Moroccan, rustic, country or modern.

Clearing The Canvas

You should then clear everything out of the kitchen. While you are removing all the items you can sort them into groups. There should be a group for thing you are keeping in the kitchen, things that are going to be thrown away, things that can be sold or given away and things that are going to be stored elsewhere in your home. Always ask yourself whether an item will help establish the style or theme that you are trying to create before you decide to keep it in your kitchen.

Once you have cleared everything out of the kitchen, you should clean the area thoroughly. Wipe down all the surfaces and make sure it is as clean as possible. The idea is that you will be starting from a clean canvas.

Creating The Style Or Theme

Painting the walls and ceiling of any room is the easiest and quickest way of changing the entire space. There are also many different techniques that you can use to help establish your theme. For example, if you are trying to create a Moroccan theme then you can use a terracotta colour paint and apply it using the sponge technique.

You can then think about your storage solutions. Adding shelves to a space is a create way of displaying and storing things. Wall mounted shelves are also relatively inexpensive and easy to mount. You can also give your existing kitchen cupboards a fresh coat of paint or sand them down and varnish them in a different shade of varnish. Adding new handles to your kitchen cupboards and drawers is also a great and inexpensive way of changing the look of your kitchen.

Accessories are also a good way of establishing a certain theme in the kitchen. You can add things like plants, mirrors, art and family photos to the space. Ornaments are also great ideas. For example, if you are trying to establish a Moroccan theme then you can have a few brass lanterns. You should try not to add too many of these accessories because it can make the space seem a little cluttered.
