Office Desk Design

Revised: July 4, 2011

An office desk should be selected around the job that you are performing. If you are administrative assistant, then your desk will have to be spacious to accommodate all your paperwork. However, if you are a web designer working on a MAC or computer the whole day, then your desk can be smaller.

The desk plays a pivotal role in office design because everyone needs a work surface to work from. It should be multi-functional allowing you to place and hold a number of desk accessories such as a filing tray, telephone, laptop, pen and pencil holders, books or notepads.
Office desk design has seen a lot of improvement over the last few years and there are a wide variety of styles, colours and materials to choose from. We will look closely at the different types of desks that can be found in the office.

Computer Desk

A computer desk is essentially used for computer work. This desk is available in various styles ranging from corner shaped, I shape, and U shapes. It comes with some interesting features such as an adjustable keyboard tray, monitor shelf, lockable drawers and compartments for shelving and filing. There are also cable-routing holes making it easier to connect all the cables and wiring. This desk takes up minimal space and creates a very neat appearance.

L-shaped Desk

An L-shaped office desk provides ample space for you to do your work on. This is an elegant looking desk which is large enough to be used in a reception area, conference room, boardroom or other multi-use areas where meetings, presentations or gatherings are held. It can accommodate more than one person, so two employees can actually share this work surface. L-shaped desks have some great features such as file drawers to store lever arch files or office supplies, and lockable drawers to hold documents. Available in a wide range of high quality finishes such as maple, beech, cherry, oak or mahogany.

U-shaped Desk

The U-shaped desk is shaped in a semi circle and allows for much more desk space. This the perfect option if two people are going to use the same work surface. It is also useful if you intend allocating one part of area for your computer and printer, and office equipment. The U-shaped desk is multi-functional and can be used in various office environments. Although, the U-shaped desk takes up a lot of floor space, it will provide the individual who has to multitask with plenty of room.

Reception Desk

The reception desk has to fit in with the look and feel of the company. In other words, it has to make a statement because it is the first thing that clients and visitors will see. A reception desk can be corner shaped, L-shaped, U-shaped, straight or custom made depending on your needs. There are various styles ranging from traditional, contemporary and modern in wood, glass, metallic or acrylic finishes. While the reception desk has to project style and professionalism, it should also be functional.
