Installing A Ceiling Fan
Ceiling installations do not have to be difficult. In fact, you can even do it yourself! Maybe you would love a new ceiling fan for those hot summer days, but have always just thought that ceiling installations are too much effort. Here are a few tips for installing a ceiling fan.
First Steps
You will have to start the process by taking down whatever is currently in the place where you want your ceiling fan. It will most probably be a light fixture. If there is not a light where you want your fan, you will have to get the services of a professional electrician, in order to have the correct electrical wiring for your fan.
Make sure, however, before you start taking anything down, that the main switch is off! You don’t want to end up in the hospitable when all you wanted to do was put up a ceiling fan!
This will cost you a whole lot more than hiring an electrician to do the job would have cost!
Secure Support
The next thing you need to do in the process of installing your new ceiling fan is to make sure that the junction box is very firmly attached to the ceiling. There must be adequate support for the ceiling fan once it is installed.
Next, install the relevant part of the fan into the opening and fasten everything through securing the mounting brackets. If you have found that the junction box is no longer suitable for supporting the weight of the fan, you will have to try and access the box from above… this means going through the attic or roof. Secure the box to ensure that it will stay in place. The last thing you want is a fan falling from your ceiling! This can be very dangerous indeed. If the junction box looks unsteady and you are not sure what to do, rather ask the help of a professional.
Last Additions
Lastly, you will need to attach the fan blades. This should be quite easily attachable! If you are confused about the parts and you are not sure how everything fits together, check the instruction manual. There should be clear instructions for attaching the blades. Wobbly blades are a sign that the blades have been attached incorrectly. Make sure everything is well balanced to avoid flying blades in your house!
Take Note
The wiring that allows your fan to work will not also work for switching on the lights (in the case of your ceiling fan containing a light as well). Take into consideration that separate wiring is needed for both a light and chain that adjusts the speed.
If the instruction manual accompanying the fan is unclear or you are struggling with the wiring, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You will be glad you did once your new ceiling installation is in working condition!
