Relationship With Your Building Contractor

Revised: June 28, 2011

There is much information available on how to find the right contractor. You will, however, not come across information on homeowner-contractor relationships that easily! Here are just a few ways through which you can ensure a positive relationship with your building contractor.

Quotes

It is okay to ask for quotes at various companies. In fact, it is good for you to ask for as many quotes as possible, as home renovations can become quite costly. But do not waste everyone’s time by asking for quotes when you know you are not going to go through with the project.

Make sure you have your plans together and have decided on something definite before you start asking for quotes. A contractor won’t be mad if you choose another company – it is business and just the way things work! But wasting everybody’s time, however, is another matter.

Don’t Interfere

Remember the building contractor you have chosen is a skilled person with many years of experience. Don’t constantly interfere, telling him or her what to do. You certainly will not be happy if the building contractor starts giving you advise on how to manage your job.

If you are communicating well with your contractor you won’t have to be on site all the time pointing things out that you think are wrong. Or if you are married, let either you or your spouse handle communicating with the contractor, as it might get frustrating if two people are trying to manage what the building contractor does. If you have chosen a reputable company there should be no need for you to constantly fret over everything.

Do Your Research

If you want to avoid any bad experiences with your building contractor, make sure you have done your homework before the time by doing all the necessary background checks. Have you seen work done by the specific contractor? Have you spoken to people with whom he or she has worked? You cannot merely randomly choose any building contractor without checking that he or she is a fraud.

Be Patient

You cannot expect your house to be squeaky clean if renovations are being done. So stop complaining about dust and other forms of mess everywhere. Building or renovating a house is a messy process – know that everything will be back to normal once the work is done. You cannot ask the contractor that all the tools and equipment must be packed away everyday – this will waste a lot of valuable time for which you will have to pay. Be accommodating and complain about the mess afterwards – not while the house is in the process of being built!

It is possible to have a very good relationship with your building contractor. Do your research on potential companies for your renovations and don’t interfere too much with the process, and you are sure to have a happy building experience!
