Waterproofing Concrete Roofs

Published: June 23, 2011

It is important to waterproof your roof the right way. This will ensure that you get the best results and the protection you need. Protection is especially needed in concrete roof because this material can easily get damaged and requires a lot of maintenance.

Surface Preparation

It is important to prepare the surface by cleaning it in order to remove all the dirt and debris. What you should do is to power wash the entire surface area of the roof in order to remove loose material. Be sure to be cautious in order to not damage any interior areas due to roof leakage that is inside the building. In certain situations, a shot-blaster may be needed to roughen the surface. It is also a good idea to fill any large cracks and crevices with mortar.

Prime The Surface

After cleaning and preparing the surface you then have to prime the roof surface with preferably a pure acrylic plastic super primer. This type of primer dries up quickly and will easily flow into the cracks and crevices of the concrete rooftop. It will bond to the concrete with remarkable adhesion. Super Primer has an affinity for concrete and it actually glues together and strengthens old concrete surfaces. Be sure to read all the instructions before beginning and always run a test patch in an inconspicuous area first. This help you see if the product works properly and if there is proper adhesion and drying.

Seam Tape

The next step is to seam tape all remaining cracks larger than one-eighth of an inch. Use preferably rubber tape since it can contour easily to the surface and will stick with the most remarkable adhesion to the primed surface. This way it will be near impossible to remove this seam tape.

Apply A Topcoat On The Roof Surface

Apply at least two gallons per 100 square feet of elasto-barrier. Then apply another two or maybe three gallons of elastomeric acrylic plastic coating per 100 square feet. This will provide the best protection for the roof and ensure great results.

Drainage

It is important to ensure proper drainage on concrete roofs. With this application, you will be substantially strengthening the concrete with the pure acrylic plastic Super Primer. Also be sure to apply seam tape where the vertical and horizontal concrete joints meet at the parapet roof and wall joints. The parapet wall and cap also need to be water proofed. This combination of coatings, as well as the outside of the parapet wall will be waterproofed and protected.

Roof Decks

When working on roof decks which will be usually walked on, it is important to apply durable plastic paint that is non-skid as a final coat. This will help prevent any serious accidents and ensure safety. This type of paint comes in a wide variety of colours; light colours are perfect for warm areas while dark colours are the best choice for areas that are cold.
