Kitchen Sink

Revised: June 23, 2011

Although many people view the kitchen sink as a simple thing, an attractive sink can make a huge difference in the kitchen. Kitchens are probably the most used room in many houses and the kitchen sink is probably the most used area of a kitchen. Because it is used for both cleaning and food preparation, it should not be an afterthought when designing your kitchen.

Usually we need more than one sink

Having more than one kitchen sink can allow you to soak dishes in your main kitchen sink while still cleaning and preparing food in the other. How many of us sometimes find ourselves washing up dishes by hand in spite of having a dishwasher in the kitchen.

The design of your kitchen sink must also fit in with your kitchen or it could well look out of place. Integral kitchen sinks and drain boards are a great way to mingle the design of your countertop with the sink itself. It also makes cleaning up a breeze as there are no seams that get in the way. When you choose your kitchen sink, find one that not only looks good but will suit your needs. Make sure it is both wide enough and deep enough to accommodate your needs.

Antique sinks of old had so many uses

Many people today opt for a vintage sink. You are buying many things when you buy a vintage sink. Firstly, you are buying craftsmanship. It is no secret that sinks and plumbing equipment in general are not as good as they used to be, say about sixty years ago. You know that if a sink has lasted this long, it is a usually a high quality piece of furniture. Most antique sinks are made out of cast iron, covered in enamel. Obviously this is going to be a bit heavier than your modern fibreglass alternatives, but they are very popular. Cast iron is well known for storing heat. So if you fill your sink with hot water, the water will stay warmer for much longer. In addition, generally vintage sinks were made with rounded edges, making them perfect for bathing young children

Another class of sink are those that are made out of stone. These come in all shapes and sizes and will last significantly longer than any other type. Because they are so heavy and because they often come in awkward shapes, you may need to use a contractor who has a background in stone sinks to fit it.

Part of the charm of owning a vintage sink is that they all have their own characteristics and quirks. You never know who was washing dishes or vegetables in that sink before you. Standing in front of it can spark your imagination in thinking about the lives of all the different people that might have used it before you, and their thoughts as they stood in front of it, using it.

An antique sink has its own characteristics

Part of the fun of owning a vintage sink is the many different characteristics you can find in it. If you want to use an enamelled cast iron sink, make sure that there are no significant cracks in the enamel or any excessive abrasion marks. This could lead to a significantly shorter life span, and will be much harder to clean. But when all is said and down, if you feel like an antique touch to your kitchen, an antique kitchen sink could be a great long term investment and conjure up all sorts of dreaming.
