Decals
A decal is a sticker made with either plastic or cloth like material that is printed on all types of surfaces and has a variety of images and patterns on it. Decals are very popular among cars and are now being used for advertising and a range of other purposes.
Decals come in a wide variety and some of them include vinyl peel and stick and what’s commonly known as water-dip or water-slide. A water-dip or water-slide decal is screen-printed on a layer of water-soluble adhesive on water-resistant paper. It is called water-dip because the paper used must first be dipped in water before the decal is applied. Once it is in contact with water, the glue gets easily loosened causing the decal to be removed easily and then applied. However, it should not be exposed in the water for too long as this will cause the glue to be totally dissolved which will prevent the decal from adhering to the surface it is applied on.
The peel-and-stick type of decal is actually called a vinyl sticker that can be transferred by peeling off its base. The sign industry calls these peel-and-stick vinyl stickers vinyl-cut-decals. They are also very popular and very effective.
Decal Composition
Decals usually compose of these layers. The first top layer is called label stock and is made of paper of film called face stock. The printing of the images, logos or text is usually done on the top side of the top paper or film. At the bottom of the face stock is where the adhesive layer is found. A layer of silicone is applied on the top of the backing material which has the adhesive layer. The bottom layer of the label stock is provided by the paper or film layer liner.
Application
Vinyl comes in large rolls that are fed through a cutter or large-format printer/cutter. The designs are created in specialized computer software and sent to the machines via cable link for production. Once the design is cut into the vinyl, the excess vinyl on the sheet is removed in a process called weeding. A paper pre-mask is applied to the top of the vinyl design to allow easy application of multiple letters and shapes at one time.
